Puppy Training 101 Class Now Enrolling!

puppy trainingHere at Guthrie Pet Hospital, we offer Puppy Training 101–a group “manners” class for puppies and their owners. Our next class begins on Tuesday, August 28th (less than two weeks from now) and has spots available for enrollment! Here are some FAQs about the class.




What age of puppies can enroll in puppy 101?

Puppy Training 101 is a group class available to puppies from 12 weeks to 6 months old. To enroll, puppies must be up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccines, deworming, and flea/tick treatment.

What is the length of the course?

It’s a 6-week course that meets for 1 hour a week on Tuesdays at 7 pm.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the course is $100.

What techniques, tools, and equipment are used for training in Puppy Training 101?

This class uses ONLY positive reinforcement techniques. There is no physical coercion, intimidation, or punishment involved or allowed. (No “leash popping,” “dominance theory,” pushing, dragging, yelling, spanking, etc.) Equipment needed for this course: your puppy, regular collar or harness, 4 or 6-foot leash (no retractable leashes), lots of pea-sized food treats that your puppy loves to eat. Choke chains, prong collars, electric collars, and other aversive tools are NOT ALLOWED.

Why is a class like Puppy Training 101 necessary/important for my dog and me?

It teaches the most fundamental skills, as well as allowing puppies to socialize with each other (and other puppies’ owners) in a safe environment. In addition to offering socialization and teaching obedience cues, the class also provides Q&A time at the end of each weekly session for owners to seek advice on common “puppy problem behaviors.”

What will my puppy and I learn throughout Puppy Training 101?

The cues/skills that will be taught during this course are:


This targeting cue teaches the puppy to touch the owner’s hand with the puppy’s nose. It’s a foundation-level skill used to help owners and puppies build confidence while they learn the importance of timing and consistency.


This focus cue teaches the puppy to look to the owner. It’s a foundation-level skill used to build a relationship and increase focus between the owner and puppy.


This movement cue teaches the puppy to walk with the owner. It’s a basic-level skill used to acclimate the puppy to walk on a collar/harness and leash without pulling or balking.


This position cue teaches the puppy to sit when asked. It’s a basic-level skill used to establish a default neutral body position for the puppy.


This movement/position cue teaches the puppy to come to the owner. It’s a basic-level skill used to establish a strong, one-word recall for the puppy. THIS IS A LIFE-SAVING SKILL.
